Yesterday HK has been hit by its first severe tropical storm of the year named Fengshen. It seems it was initially defined as a Typhoon when it crossed the Philippines and caused many death but it has been downgraded into a tropical storm.
We received a tropical storm warning level 8 by HK Observatory early in the morning which remained active until arround 12pm HKT.
As results:
- Schools and offices were closed.
- Transportation were running at a minimal level
- Many flights were delayed
- Hong Kong’s financial markets were shutdown during the alert.
I was then able to stay home and sleep a bit longer even though i regularly looked at the weather on the HK Observatory website to check if the alert has been released. I was not the only person on this website as it was very slow. I guess the performance was impacted by the fact that everybody was wondering when the alert number 8 will be removed in order to go back to work.
So far, HK has not accounted any death however many people made reports of flooding. No wonder if you look at the video below:
Now the storm is going accross China and has hit first Shenzhen yesterday afternoon.
I’m still wondering how a typhoon or tropical storm are named. Do you have any idea? if yes, please do share the answer via a comment on this post.
