I guess you are probably wondering “Why did he call his blog ‘The Gweilo’? What does that mean?”.
If you are originated from Hong Kong or if you’ve lived in Hong Kong for many years, you already know the answer as you probably have already heard or used this term quite often during your daily activity.
Well, the answer to your question is very simple: In Hong Kong, an abundance of nicknames for Westerners was developed over years. Gweilo (鬼佬; gwai2 lou2) has a long use of racially deprecatory. Translated into English, it literally means “ghost man” or “ghost guy”. However nowadays it became slang more commonly used than the more polite term “saiyahn” (Western person). There are, however, other ruder terms used either vehemently or, again, humorously.
Being an European guy, I’m considered as a Gweilo. I found it funny and quite original thus my wish to call this blog ‘The Gweilo’.
This name clearly announce the spirit and objectives of this blog. It reflects a guy who will share his life and experience as a foreigner living in Asia and discovering a completly different culture, surprising and stunning.
